The Fighting 69th, or 69th Infantry Regiment, is a United States Army unit that traces its lineage back to the American Civil War. The regiment was originally made up of Irish immigrants and was named for the famous 69th New York State Militia, which saw action in the Civil War as part of the Irish Brigade.
The Fighting 69th has seen combat in a number of conflicts, including World War I, World War II, and the War on Terror. During World War II, the regiment fought in North Africa and Italy, earning several battle honours for its service. In the War on Terror, the unit has been deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq.
In addition to its combat service, the Fighting 69th has also been involved in numerous community and civic activities. The regiment is headquartered at the Lexington Avenue Armory in New York City and is currently part of the New York Army National Guard's 27th Infantry Brigade Combat Team.
